After the News Sinks In
by kathy marie

He wanted to meet me one early mornin'
At the Shari's restaurant on the corner.
I walked in, saw him, and he saw me
And you could tell we liked each other.

We talked, the waitress poured,
Nothing seemed to stop us.
Then he just had to say
His marriage might just stop us.

Chorus
Well, that's news to me.
Thanks for telling me.
I'd liked to have known
At least a couple days ago.
I'm so glad you got this off your chest.
But now let's lay this matter down to rest.
And I'll leave quietly in a minute,
After the news sinks in.

I couldn't move, couldn't breathe, couldn't believe
What he had just told me.
I sat there cryin', trying to hide
The feelings he didn't deserve to see.
And finally, I decided to ask
If he had any children.
And he said, "how'd you know to ask?
Actually, I have two of them."

Chorus

Bridge
After the news sinks in,
I might learn for the next time.
After the news sinks in...
Well, there won't be a next time.

(Bonus Verse)
As if it wasn't bad enough already
I thought that he had hurt his hand.
So then he started to unwrap the tape
And put back on his wedding band.

That's when I took my stand
To pay the bill and leave.
And I looked one last time at him,
And said "Happy Birthday to me!"

Chorus and end
